The Bute Cycling Festival, otherwise known as the Rothesay Weekend, has been running since the 1940's and the packed racing itinerary was as exciting as ever. Kicking off with the fearsome hill climb event up the amphitheatre-like Serpentine, this is a 10% gradient featuring no fewer than 13 switch back turns. It makes for exciting racing. Sean Barron flew up the climb only for a rider coming down the hill to collide with him. A second attempt saw him still achieve a 15th place time of two minutes sixteen seconds. Gordon Graham kept well within himself, saving energy for the later two-up time trial, but still managed a mid-field result with a two minute fifty. Wearing British Transplant colours, Stevie Donaldson gave his transplanted heart and lungs a thorough workout by coming 73rd in a time of four minutes twenty eight. The Rothesay weekend was officially underway.
