FWCC rider Cadge Patterson crossed the line in ninth place in this week's TLI Synergy Cycles Summer Criterium race held at Fife Cycle Park in Lochgelly. This is a dedicated 2.4 million pound cycle racing circuit made up of smooth tarmac and tight turns, which makes for thrilling racing. Rider Patterson, well-known locally for sporting a moustache that is part Nigel Mansel, part world war two fighter ace, started well and maintained his position in the leading group throughout the race. The tight turns and exposed nature of the track meant that breakaways were never a serious option and any riders who thought they could escape the bunch were swiftly brought back. Patterson begun his cycling career in BMX and the rapid accelerations, fluctuating pace, and high levels of bike handling skill needed meant the race suited him well. On the final lap Patterson was in the leading group and missed a higher placing, even outright victory, by a whisker (pun intended). Ninth place is an excellent result in a large and hotly contested field, and even more remarkable given this is only rider Patterson's second ever race.
