This looks a good ride Peter. Do you know the distance?

I noticed the road was closed at Cunninghamhead yesterday although it might be passable for cyclists.

Cheers, Gordon G.

Hi Natalie,

Sorry to hear about your car breakdown. Did the AA come to the rescue and have you got it fixed?

In the good old days when cyclists were tough this would not be a problem. People would ride to the event, race or club meeting just to get a few extra bike riding miles in. None of this car use.

Anyway, I'm not a good example. I've thought about riding down to the club on a Monday and the long summer evenings would certainly give me time.... but I'm much too lazy.

There was an old chap (over 80) who visited the club on Monday night who was telling us about how he rode over 237 miles in the Ayrshire 12 hour event back in the 1950's. My bet is he would think nothing of riding 20-30 miles to the club meeting in those days. The finishing circuit for the 12 hour event went through Drybridge. I'm not sure any of our current members could ride 237 miles in 12 hours.... perhaps we could do it as a team relay (now there's a good idea for the club league next year.... anybody up for it?).

I can't remember the chaps name (shame on me). It might have been Masson. It's interesting to know he is still doing 10 mile TT's at over 20mph. Fantastic!

Cheers, Gordon G.

George Masson is that chaps name........

I have it on good authority that he was a VG rider in his day and indeed Club Champion on a few occasions with FWCC. He is now the President of his current club which he joined after leaving FWCC and moving south in the 60's..... I think he was with FWCC for a good number of years and has promised to send some information on the history of FWCC as and when he can.

Like you said Gordon, a real cyclist from the good old days.

Aye, I remember now. George. It'll be interesting to learn a wee bit more of the history of the club. The Fullarton had some great cyclists in the past.

I may not make it to the club tonight dependant on how my twin girls are :-) I have still to pay for some clothing would it be possible to pay this online?

My grandfather managed 241 miles in a 12 at the age of 56 quite an achievement. His training was cycling 27 miles each way to work, he was a miner working 8 hours at the coal face between training rides, hardy stuff

Hi Graham,

They were definitely hardy chaps in those days. I bet your grandfather found the 12hr event relatively easy compared to working down the mine..... mind you, maybe not as hard as looking after twins..... :D

I wouldn't think there were many jobs tougher than a miners.

Cheers, Gordon G.
