Snowy Sunday Club Run

Post by Guy_Walker » Sun 04 Mar, 2018 7:42 pm

Road miles this week have been few and far between, the wintry weather proving just too hazardous. With conditions improving slightly, and the red weather warning replaced by the altogether more normal yellow one, a hard core of eight riders met on Sunday for the weekly club run. The route was carefully selected to avoid the worst of the conditions, and the accent was firmly on a steady, safe run. With that in mind the group, comprising Allie Kinnaird, Phillip Murrison, Mickey Allan, Colin Broadfoot, and others, departed from outside a busier than normal Portal in Irvine at 09:30 sharp. The wind was still blowing in from the East and there was no other word for it: it was freezing. The plan had been to avoid the ice by taking a run along the Coast Road to Pennyglen, but the early arrival of snow showers meant a change of plan. Heading past HMS Gannet a military transport plane was seen to make a missed approach in the deteriorating conditions, but the group pressed on past Adamton, right onto the A719 to Sandyford, then left to Mossblown. The snow eased noticeably on the climb up the Mauchline Road towards Tarbolton, and stopped altogether for the run past Hayes Garden Centre. In fact, with the conditions improving to 'normally bad' the decision was taken to use the small lane that leads to Braeside Farm. Unfortunately, on the descent to the junction with Ayr Road the surface was snow covered. The only crash came from Mikey Allan, who decided it would be safer to walk and promptly slipped over. De Waldens Garden Centre, next to Sprockets Cycles, was the cafe destination of choice this week. Cold weather makes cyclists hungry and it was double bacon and egg rolls all round, and a huge slice of Caramac cheesecake. Between 35 and 50 miles were covered at a leisurely 15mph average: mission accomplished.
